Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father, a carnival barker, passed away as a young girl, requiring her mother to provide for the family by being waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth attended school, and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. She quit the school she was attending within two years of her education to pursue a career as an actor. Her chosen path proved to be strewn with obstacles: In New York, she obtained a job posing for stills in a magazine for crime However, the stage was not a match for her. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home to the United States and quit the job she was working in. As an usherette, she worked during the early morning hours and also was a part of the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. Also, she studied drama. She ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
